How many undefeated Missouri boys or girls basketball teams in state history?

 The other day, I was suggesting that there might be two or three undefeated class one Missouri girl's basketball teams in the 2024 state tournament.  Meadville and Delta were two obvious class one teams and then a follower, Jon Dykstra, suggested that Platte Valley might be another outstanding AND undefeated girl's team in the class one tournament.  

It is really difficult to get through an entire season without a defeat.  So many factors have to be in your team's favor to win every single game.  Injuries, illnesses, a cold shooting night, and even bad or missed calls in a close game, can all add up to one or two losses for even the best teams.

So, how many Missouri high school basketball teams have gone undefeated in state history?

And has there ever been two undefeated teams face-off in a state final?

How have the girls, who started in 1973, done vs. the boy's teams which go back to the early 1900s?  I would assume that there were more boys' undefeated teams with that long history, rather than the girls in their fifty years of competition?

Well, folks, the girls win that battle, hands down.

47 girl's teams have gone undefeated in fifty years of competing while only 33 boy's teams have been undefeated in over one hundred years of existence.

Here are the undefeated girl's teams from MSHSAA records (boys are listed below):


For the girl's teams, Incarnate Word Academy leads with four championships, followed by Marshfield, Northeast Nodaway, and Strafford (three each), St. Joseph's Academy, Kickapoo, Scott County Central, Penney, and Jefferson (Conception/South Nodaway) with two each.

Congratulations to all those great teams.

Of those 33 undefeated boys' teams, only two schools have ever been undefeated twice... Portageville and Scott County Central.

But the original question has still not been answered and I will probably wait until after Santa comes to research this (unless a reader knows the answer), "How many times have two undefeated teams faced off in the state final game?"

Gramp's Braggin' Rights Missouri HS girls basketball ratings - Class Three

Updated March 12th, 2024 There was a time in January and early February, when the MBCA Coaches poll had El Dorado at #1 and Fair Grove at #2 but Gramps never doubted Fair Grove, who was my #1 all year long.  I had them tied for #1 in the January 25th ratings but only that once.  El Dorado gave Fair Grove a good game in the championship, but the Lady Eagles outlasted El Dorado in a low-scoring defensive struggle to win their second consecutive title. There were some great teams behind these two powerhouses.  Centralia, Fatima, Montgomery County, California. Lathrop, South Shelby, and Strafford, who lost to Fair Grove in a stacked district, were all balanced teams.  In a normal year, any of these great teams might have taken home the gold but Fair Grove and El Dorado were just that much better.  Both of those teams could challenge a bunch of class five or six top rated teams. Gramp's Braggin' Rights Missouri HS girls basketball ratings - Class One

Updated March 8th, 2024 Congratulations to the PLATTE VALLEY Longhorns (aka South Nodaway/Jefferson (Conjunction) according to MSHSAA).  They soundly defeated a great Northeast Cairo squad, 64-52, to win their third state title in four years , or so I think. It is a bit confusing with all the names involved at Platte Valley etc. etc.  I assume that the school districts have combined town teams from those parts to come up with the convoluted name, but they have been mighty fine, whatever you call them. They may have felt Gramps disrespected them throughout this year.   I had them rated in my top four all year long but never at the top.  Why?  Well, their Strength of Schedule was not that great and that dragged down their rating.  It is tough to rate teams that are 300 miles apart (like Platte Valley and Delta) when they do not play any common opponents.  You really do not know how really good they are until you get to the state tournament, and boy, oh boy, were they good.
